From the makers of The Matrix, this new flick Ninja Assassin looks to be the next title to capitalize on the recent popularity of all things Ninja. Produced by the Wachowski brothers, this flick will not be lacking in star power either, as they’ve recruited Korean hunk-extraordinaire Rain for the lead role.
From the looks of the trailer this one looks to be pretty action packed. Very dark, very violent. Very cool. What do you think? Is Rain a good choice for this movie? Or is there another Asian actor that you’d like to see in the title role? Ninjas are supposed to be Japanese aren’t they? Is there any Japanese actor that can equal Rain’s fame? It seems that there’s a wave of big budget war movies in Japan right now. After Lorelei, Sengoku 1549 and Aegis, here comes Otoko tachi no Yamato. Based on the non fiction books from Jun Henmi, Otoko tachi no Yamato relates the story of a japanese battleship during the second World War. According to twitch the budget for the movie is 14 millions $. Not bad at all. It’s directed by Junya Sato and planned for a december 2005 release.
And yes the promotional staff are already quite busy. They often show the teaser on one of the three big screens in Shibuya, they already have posters at movie theaters and a shitload of videos up on the official site.
A flop for this one would equal the wreckage of the title name battleship.
And yes, it’s the same Yamato as in Space Battleship Yamato, where the battleship in question was made from salvages from the real Yamato. Well according to wikipedia anyway.
You have making of videos here and lots of trailers here.
Aegis is the next summer blockbuster. It’s been released (k i’m late) the 28th of July.
It’s about a military ship that is taken by a group of terrorists and threatens to blow Tokyo up. Fortunately two guys on the ship will probably save the day.
What puzzles me is that they used a Hoobastank tune in the trailer and that terrible song doesn’t fit the movie at all. Something went horribly wrong in the music department. Someone must have though that to fit this big budget flick they needed to break the piggy bank and buy a foreign song. It’s a statement :”Yes we had enough money to buy a Hoobastank track wait till you see the ’splosions we have too”.
Anyway, Hiroyuki Sanada is in it, he was the guy in Last Samurai. No, not the bald guy. He was the one who didn’t like Cruise in the begining. But Cruise tends to grow on people, that’s the kind of scientologist he is, so in the end they became friend.
A part from Last Samurai, Sanada was in the very good jidaigeki Tasogare Seibei.
So go and see or rent Tasogare Seibei. But in the meantine you can go to Aegis website and watch the hoobastanked trailer.
Yet one another whacky japanese flick. I know you love it as much as i do. Ok, maybe not but still.
Kamikaze Girl ( Shimotsuma Monogatari) is about the friendship of two very different girls and their adventures in the slums of Ibaraki prefecture. Momoko is a french-maid looking lolita longing for the refinements of the lost french aristocracy while Ichiko is a hard-boiled biker gang leader.
They somehow end up friends and do crasy things for an hour and a half then it’s over. You also have an anime part to keep you entertain.
Why wouldn’t you want to watch this movie ? Come on, watch it ! Please.
For once the official site can be found in english here along with the trailer (more like a music video actually).
The two girls are Kyoko Fukada and Anna Tsuchiya, two fairly well-known pop stars in Japan. Rock n’roll.
It’s not a Japanese movie and the teasing was not as big as when the Matrix or Last Samurai invaded all the billboards available in Shibuya, but the marketing people behind Batman Begins actually spent a bit of time thinking about making the launch localized. They came up with those two shots of Tokyo and Osaka invaded by the zillions of bats. Batman begins… Pretty nice.
Note: My pics of the billboards are not perfect, but you can click on them to get a much larger version.
The official wallpaper downloads are here, the “Japan Special Content” website is here (and it has cool wallpapers too, with “Batman Begins” in Japanese on it too), and the trailers are here.
Did they do that for all the major cities worldwide? Anyone have some photo of NYC, Paris or Berlin to share?
Imagine, you’re messing with time as usual and then you end up in the 16th century facing Nobunaga Oda and his army. Would it make a good movie ?
Ok, now what if, on top of that, you have helicopters, tanks and all kind of crazy ’splosions causin’ devices. Would that make a good movie ?
To tell you the truth i’m not convinced. But if you think that would make a “kick-ass” movie, well you owe it to yourself to see Sengoku 1549.
Here’s the trailer and the official site.
Yes that’s all i have to say about Sengoku 1549. What do you want me to say anyway. I’m not going to say this looks good, ok. We get to see Star Wars after everybody so no, i’m not going to to write a detailed review about Sengoku 1549.

Sh15uya is the last hot piece of drama to hit the land of the ris… Ok now, here’s the problem. I’ve made a promise a long time ago to my now dead sister to never use the words land of the rising sun when speaking about Japan. Anyone out there talking about japan should never used those words as far as i’m concerned. It’s just a cheaper way to avoid repetition.
Who are we kidding ? I’m always talking about stuff from Japan anyway. I don’t have to use those cheap metaphors or nicknames. Let’s call a dick a dick as my grandfather used to say.
Sh15uya is a japanese TV drama that’s going to appeal to anime fans all over the world. Japanese drama means crappy video, and laughable special effects. Sh15uya is described on the official site as an Action/SF drama. It means it’s about kids getting dressed up as visual rock idols and beating the shit out of each other. Looking at the trailers i can without doubts say that this drama is retarded.
Oh, and all the 25 year old looking girls are actually 15, that’s why the drama is called Sh15uya, which means Shibuya 15. They can’t even get l33t speak right.
Negotiator Masayoshi Mashita is an upcoming movie about subway hijacking. It’s going to get released in may of this year.
Yahoo news has an article about it. It’s not really about the movie though it’s more about how public funding helped the movie to be made. Oh and it’s a spin-off of the very popular Bayside Shakedown serie. Japanese geek wunderkind Joi Ito was consultant on it.
Here’s the trailer.
Lorelei: The Witch of the Pacific Ocean is the next japanese blockbuster to hit screens. It’ll be released on the 3rd of March in its home country. It’s about a submarine (the i-507) and its crew, searching an american boat transporting an A-bomb to Tinian. They’re basically trying to stop a third bombing of Japan from happening.
It’s all fictional of course so don’t go and send me emails about how much bull***t the movie’s about. That’s not the point it’s a submarine movie and Koji Yakusho stars in it. You should be happy.
Young japanese female’s favorite Satoshi Tsumabuki is also in it. Happiness for all genders, that’s what cinema.3yen.com is all about after all.
Don’t be fooled by the navigation menu, the official site is in japanese, it also has a very annoying music. The trailer has a few english words at the begining.
I found a bunch of scale models enthusiasts discussing the design of the submarine, plus picture of said scaled submarine. That should do for our new-half readership. Triple happiness. Mission complete. Back to base.
Puchi Puchi tight T-shirt from hell ! The director of Lorelei is also the special effect director of GAMERA 3. I’m not making this up i promise. Do you see how it all makes sense now ?
Do you see ?!
